What to Expect on Virgin Voyages Compared to Other Cruise Lines Differences, What to Know, & More

The window was on the same wall as the bed and chair, and the opposite wall had the desk, mini-fridge and mirror. The converging angle of the two walls made it a tight squeeze between the bed and the desk. A pair of one-way, 15-night trips between Singapore and Australia will bookend the Australia and New Zealand sailings. Scheduled for November 2023 and March 2024, the two sailings offer overnight stays in Bali and calls at Airlie Beach, Cairns and Darwin in Australia.

The ship’s food court-styled dining, found on Deck 15, was nothing like a traditional food court. Instead of pizza, burgers, French fries, and chicken fingers, the Galley featured Bento Boxes at Bento Baby, made-to-order salads at Daily Mix, and açai bowls at The Sweet Side. We could even find freshly made juices at Juice Sea on Deck 7 and poke bowls at Sun Club Café on Deck 16.

I Spent 7 Days on My First Adults-Only Virgin Voyages Cruise

The Fab Suite, at 950 square feet, is essentially an oversized version of the Posh Suite. The extra space allows for additional seating areas in both the living room and bedroom. The Cheeky Corner Suite also comes in a range of sizes, 615 to 857 square feet, based on deck and balcony size.

Our most brilliant experiences

As with most cruise lines, the cost of a cruise depends upon when you’re traveling. You’ll find the most expensive cruises during periods of high demand such as summer and spring break. The cheapest cabin is the Insider Cabin, while the Mega RockStar Quarters Cabin is the cruise line's most luxurious option, which comes with several added perks.

The cruise cost includes traditional and speciality dining, juice, soda, Wi-Fi, gratuities and group fitness classes. Given that the ship was basically built for social media, Virgin was smart to make WiFi available and free to all guests. Premium and higher-speed WiFi packages are also available for a fee. The highest speed available is $40 for the whole voyage if purchased on the first day. While your social media channels will load perfectly with the free package, and posting is a breeze, working may be a challenge.

While I appreciated the array of options at our disposal, I found the quality of the food and service to be hit or miss. Some restaurants I loved so much that I went back a second time; at others, I took a solitary bite of food before deciding to move on. Given all the options available, there were more places than we could try on our first Virgin Voyages cruise.

Virgin Voyages says no kids on the ocean. And the kids aren’t pleased.

Considering the booking window opens 45 days before the sailing date, and that passengers in the know set their alarms to begin booking as soon as the app launches, this first access alone can be worth its weight. Sharing a room with a friend is always a tricky proposition, but even more so in the tight quarters of a cruise ship. My friend and I shared a 225-square-foot Sea Terrace suite and from the photos, it looked like we’d have some trouble squeezing in clothes for two. But we were pleasantly surprised upon arrival, as the suite was filled with plenty of space to accommodate all of our clothes and toiletries. Once you’re back on the ship after a day of exploration, award-winning entertainment options will reinforce the wisdom of leaving the kids at home. We’re more “Romeo and Juliet reimagined in a circus” than themed character dinners, if you will; more immersive cabaret than 7 pm movie and jammies.

Of the ship’s additional restaurants, we loved Pink Agave’s taste of Mexico through tlayuds, memelas, sopes, tortas, esquites, and tamales, but were less impressed by Test Kitchen. Change the name on your voyage up to 48 hours before you head out if you can’t make it, or want to change whoever is sailing with you. We've taken care (of taking care) of your servers, so we cover the gratuities for your onboard experiences. So much is included on your cruise, but one area that isn’t — alcoholic beverages. Virgin Voyages does charge for these, but there are a couple of things to know. It’s a bit easier than having to dig out your card each time to need it, but it does have a tendency to want to come off occasionally.

Most video call services are either blocked by the cruise line or use up too much bandwidth to work as they would on land. Hopefully, you’re not working on vacation, but if you need to make that one important client video call, you may be in trouble. However, its standard rooms won't keep you inside when the real fun is found in the ships' public areas.

The Posh Suite measures 833 square feet, with living and sleeping areas divided by a wall. It can sleep four (the living room sofa can convert to a bed) and has a bath and a half (the master with a peekaboo shower looking into the bedroom and out the balcony doors beyond). The balcony is similar to the other suite terraces with lounge chairs, a hammock, Champagne table and chairs and a small couch. The Brilliant Suite measures 482 square feet and looks like an expanded version of the Seriously Suite. The extra space allows for a modular couch that can double as a bed; this suite can sleep up to four. Its balcony is slightly longer than the Seriously Suite's, meaning it can offer the larger Champagne table of the Brilliant Suite.

The cruise was one of their new standard routes, four nights from Miami to Nassau and Bimini Beach in the Bahamas; markedly different from the standard 7-10 night Caribbean trips you'll find on other cruise lines. Explore iconic sites along the Red Sea and the Mediterranean on this 14-night one-way voyage from Dubai to Piraeus (Athens). After experiencing the modern wonders of the Arabian Gulf, you’ll cross the Suez Canal and reach the stunning Greek coast. With late-night stays in Safaga and Alexandria, plus full days in Rhodes and Santorini there’s plenty of time to soak up the history, revel in the desert sunshine and get your island glow going. Brilliant Lady will set sail from Miami to San Juan on 24 December 2023, giving Sailors the chance to celebrate the holiday season with Virgin Voyages.

Another top destination for Virgin Voyages is the Mediterranean, where the line has been expanding quickly as it adds new ships. The other two longer Caribbean itineraries that Virgin is offering in 2024 are both out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and operated only by Valiant Lady. What are the best Virgin Voyages destinations you can visit and itineraries you can choose? While the latter voyages aren't starting up until the end of 2023, they're already open for bookings. Still, as Virgin Voyages grows — it has a fourth ship on order — it is likely to greatly expand its offerings in other parts of the world. With spaces that transform to your given mood, you can live like a rockstar or retreat to a quiet and luxurious oasis whenever you need a break away from all the action.

Entertainment on the ship is more mature, such as drag shows in the nightclub. Many events go on until later at night than on a normal cruise. The food offered is more adventurous and upscale (though traditional options are available). Instead of waterslides and putt-putt, it’s yoga classes, tattoo parlors, and fitness equipment. During your visit to the club, any drinks you order are charged to the ship, so bar tab credits you have during your cruise will work here, too. The food, which ranged from snapper steamed in a banana leaf to a salad featuring Bahamian mango and macadamia, is included, though some dishes were better than others.

The look is more spare than you'll find on other cruise lines that feature thick mattresses, fluffy duvets and faux-wood cabinetry in their cabins. Balcony cabins are designated either regular, extra-large, centrally located or limited-view, and your cruise fare will change depending on which you choose. Cheeky Corner and Suite Aft Suites are also divided into Pretty Big Terrace, Even Bigger Terrace and Biggest Terrace classes. Other cabins and suites in all categories can sleep three or four guests. Groups who don't want to squeeze four into a room (and we wouldn't recommend it, given Virgin's tiny bathrooms and limited storage) can take advantage of connecting rooms.
